Experimental Series: Winterstorm
The Experimental Series embodies the Grants' family philosophy of freedom and possibilities. Only by unlearning what we know and collaborating with like-minded mavericks can we try new things, experiment, push whisky boundaries and challenge traditions to create a range of ground-breaking single malts.
INTENSIFIED BY ICE AND INGENUITY
The IPA Experiment together with Project XX (Experiment 2), were the first two variants that made the Experimental Series and were launched in 2016. Late 2017, the third experiment was released, the limited batch 1 of Glenfiddich Winterstorm. The second., bigger release, came out mid 2018.
Brian Kinsman found his inspiration in the freezing vineyards of the renowned Peller Estates winery near Niagara, Canada. When he returned to the Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, his memories of the extreme conditions and the unique production process of the intensely sweet Icewine led him to experiment with several French oak Icewine casks. What he found fascinated him. Only the rarer whiskies, those aged for 21 years, could cope with the extra Icewine intensity. Having more tannins, extracted from years in oak, these malts brought out a uniquely fresh lychee note, instead of being swamped by sweetness.
Brian experienced the freezing Canadian January weather to learn about how the grapes had to be picked at moonlight at -10°C when they were as hard as pebbles. Working with Pellar Estates VP of winemaking, Craig McDonald, it was an oppurtinity to push the bounderies of taste to create a new unexpected whisky.
