Chinese New Year / Lunar New Year
The Chinese zodiac, or Sheng Xiao (生肖), is a repeating 12-year cycle of animal signs and their ascribed attributes, based on the lunar calendar. In order, the zodiac animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.
The Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, marks the transition from one animal to the next.
The Lunar New Year is a momentous occasion and a celebration often associated with a lot of travel as the spring period around the holiday-known as Chunyun in China-lasts about 40 days. In 2019, the last Chunyun before COVID, the Chinese Ministry of Transportation estimated that nearly 3 billion trips would get made during the period. Visiting and reuniting with family during Lunar New Year is a significant part of the annual holiday, especially when so many students and professionals work in Special Economic Zones far from the traveler’s original home.

Designed by renowned Chinese artist Rlon Wang, the 2022 limited edition bottle completes the final edition in the designed series trilogy of Chinese New Year gift packs. The collection is inspired by the epic journey of Charles Gordon, son-in-law of Glenfiddich founder William Grant, to bring the Speyside Scotch whisky to the world.
The design of the finale edition is themed around ‘Great Homecoming’, where the Glenfiddich Stag honours Grant’s triumphant return home with magical and wonderous stories to share.
Translated as ‘Fu Lu’ in Mandarin, the iconic Stag encapsulates the sentiments of wealth, prosperity and longevity for this hopeful time of year and the concluding and design is an imagining of the next destination after reaching home finally.
Will Peacock, global luxury director says: “With the conclusion of this series of limited-edition CNY packs, artist Rlon Wang speaks to our time by capturing a feeling of optimism for the future. The talented illustrator, a fellow maverick in his field, takes our characters on one final journey to a horizon of possibility and opportunity.
Artist Rlon Wang says of the partnership: “I greatly enjoyed working with Glenfiddich for this final design; I was able to use a technique of multi-layered illustrations to put people’s brightest hopes and dreams on a canvas. I gave the design an otherworldly feel with the use of traditional symbols in futuristic forms. We see old friends – Glenfiddich’s Royal Stag and the traditional dancing Chinese lion – ascending to the stars with a bright galaxy in front of them; auspicious lanterns, lotus flowers and a soaring phoenix guide them into a vibrant world full of galactic proportions. Zero-gravity allows them to reach new heights, representing a boundless future that awaits.”

I loved playing with the symbiosis of Chinese and Scottish cultures – two connected countries on opposite sides of the world.”
Wang’s dynamic four-box design will show people making their way home by road, rail, air and sea, all filled with symbols and bright colors. Glenfiddich’s iconic stag represents wealth, prosperity and longevity in Chinese culture.
2020 - Year of the Rat
December 2019, Glenfiddich has released a limited-edition pack for Glenfiddich’s core range of single malts to celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year. Created in collaboration with Shenzhen-based artist Rlon Wang, the distinctive design is available in selected airports in Singapore, Taipei, Bangkok and Hong Kong, from December 2019 onwards.
Paying homage to the royal stag icon which appears on every bottle of Glenfiddich, Wang’s richly detailed illustration depicts the creature’s 12-pointed antlers to denote its ‘royal’ classification. The flowing ribbon and medal around its neck symbolizes Glenfiddich’s status as the world’s most-awarded single malt.
